Empower Your Health Journey with Early HbA1c Testing

Are you feeling thirstier than usual, needing to urinate more often, or noticing unexplained weight loss or tiredness?

An HbA1c test gives you a clear picture of your average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months, helping you make informed choices for your long-term health.

  • Quick and Convenient:

No fasting. No preparation. Just a simple finger-prick test at a time that suits you, perfect for regular monitoring or peace of mind.

  • Smarter Diabetes Management:

Regular HbA1c testing shows whether your diet, exercise or medication is keeping your blood sugar in range.

It's not just a number, it's your 2 to 3 month health snapshot.

  • Early Detection That Saves Lives:

A raised HbA1c can reveal pre-diabetes, a silent stage that affects many people before diabetes develops.

Caught early, it can often be reversed with simple lifestyle changes rather than lifelong medication.

  • Prevents Severe Complications:

Unchecked high blood sugar can lead to nerve damage, sight loss, kidney disease and heart problems, often before symptoms appear.

Regular testing is one of the best ways to protect your future health.

Recognising the Signs of Diabetes

These symptoms can appear with both types of diabetes, but in Type 2 diabetes they often develop slowly and are easy to overlook.

  • Increased Thirst

Persistent, excessive thirst that drinking doesn't relieve.

  • Frequent Urination

Needing to go more often, especially at night.

  • Extreme Tiredness

Ongoing fatigue that rest doesn't fix.

  • Unexplained Weight Loss

Losing weight without changing your diet or exercise.

  • Genital Itching or Thrush

Itching or repeated thrush around the genital area.

  • Slow-Healing Wounds

Cuts and sores that take much longer than usual to heal.

  • Blurred Vision

Ongoing blurred vision without a clear cause.

Monitoring Health with the HbA1c Test

The HbA1c test, also called the glycated haemoglobin test, gives a reliable average of your blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months, looking past the day-to-day ups and downs.

It's one of the most trusted tools for detecting, monitoring and managing diabetes.

What does an HbA1c test measure?

It measures the average amount of glucose attached to haemoglobin in your red blood cells over the past 2 to 3 months.

How often should I retest?

Usually every 3 to 6 months if you have diabetes, or once a year if you're at risk.

Why might my HbA1c be high?

Blood sugar that stays raised over time, often linked to diet, weight, activity levels and overall metabolic health.

Can I lower my HbA1c naturally?

Yes. Regular exercise, a balanced diet that's low in sugar and keeping to a healthy weight can all help improve blood sugar control.

What do my HbA1c results mean?

Below 42 mmol/mol is normal, so keep up a healthy lifestyle. 42 to 47 mmol/mol suggests pre-diabetes, so focus on diet and weight and retest in 3 to 6 months. 48 mmol/mol or higher may indicate diabetes and needs a repeat laboratory test and advice from your GP to confirm.

Understanding Your HbA1c Results

HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the last 2 to 3 months, which makes it a useful measure of glucose control. Use the table below to understand your result.

HbA1c (mmol/mol) HbA1c Level (%) What It Means for Your Health
Below 42 Below 6.0% Normal:Healthy blood sugar control. Retest every 12 months to make sure levels stay stable and to catch any early changes.
42 to 47 6.0% to 6.4% Pre-diabetes:A higher risk of developing diabetes. Acting early can stop it progressing. Speak to your GP and retest every 6 months.
48 or above 6.5% or above Diabetes:Indicates diabetes. See your GP for a confirmatory test and advice on management. Retest every 3 months to monitor treatment.

Please note: This is a screening test and does not replace a diagnosis from your GP. If your result falls outside the normal range, our pharmacist will talk you through it and advise you to see your GP where needed.
